Help With Maps: Map Tools

The 'Map Tools' are located within a toolbar below the map. You can use the tools to interact directly with the map, to navigate and to get extra information. Depending on which map tool you select your mouse will perform a different function.

Please click on a tool below for further information

Zooming

It is possible to zoom in and out of the map to show more or less detail at various scales. When zooming the system will automatically display the most appropriate map background for the current scale.

Zoom In

Zoom In

Click the 'Zoom In' button on the toolbar, then click on the map. The point at which you click will become the centre of the zoomed area. To zoom into a particular portion of the map click and drag a box by holding down your left mouse button.

Map Scale

In addition to using the zoom tools, it is also possible to change the map 'scale' to view different levels of detail on the map. Click inside the scale box, highlight and delete the old scale. Use your keyboard number pad to enter a new scale before hitting the 'Enter' or 'return' key.

Scale Box

Remember that reducing the number is equivalent to zooming in, and increasing the number is equivalent to zooming out.

Note that, when you adjusting the map scale, the GIS will automatically display the most appropriate map background for your selection.

Get Info
The 'Get Info' tool can be used to display information about a feature within a layer and to return to the relevant information within a local council's website (where available). To use the 'Get Info' tool map layers must first be added. See 'Adding Map Layers' for details.

Select the 'Get Info' tool then click on the icon on the map which represents your feature of interest. The system will display summary information about the chosen feature.

Print Map
Use the 'Print Map' tool on the toolbar to create a printable map. Clicking on the 'Print Map' button opens a new browser window, which contains a printable page. Next use your browser 'File' menu and select 'Print' to send this page to your printer.

To print the maps produced by this system your web browser must be capable of opening 'pop up' windows. See the system requirements page for more information. Please note that the use of 'pop up blockers' will disable the printing option provided by this system.

Please ensure you have read our copyright information before printing any maps. Also see 'Printing Web Pages'.

If you require technical advice when using the Map Tools please contact us; we will be happy to help wherever possible.
