The
A-Z of Services is an alphabetical list of 'subjects' which are covered by the services of local councils in County Durham. Behind the scenes the A-Z of Services is actually a means of searching local councils sites. However it works differently than the simple search and advanced searches, in that it directs you to only the most relevant information.
To begin, click on an initial letter to jump to that section of the alphabet and browse the subjects. Next click on a subject to reveal a 'results list' which shows where further information can be found. Some subjects that you select will reveal a map of County Durham, prompting you to select the area you are interested in, before the results list is presented.
Note that 'results' are listed according to their relevance to the subject you clicked on, highest percentage first. The list provides a clickable link along with an excerpt from the information. It also indicates where the information is located (i.e. on which local council website). Simply click on a link to be taken to the relevant information in its original location. Results are listed in blocks of 10, to see additional results click the 'next' link at the top of the results listing or use the page numbers at the bottom to jump directly to a specific point in the list.
The results from the A-Z of Services are limited to only html and Portable Document Format (.pdf) files only, therefore the A-Z of Services won't find any results in file formats such as Microsoft Word (.doc), Excel (.xls) or Powerpoint (.ppt).
Searching for Suitable Subjects
If you are unable to find the A-Z subject that you are looking for, you can search for subjects that match your 'keyword' by entering it into the search box. 'Matching' and 'related' subjects will then be provided for you to choose from.
Searching Within a Subject
The 'Search Within...' box will look at the subject you have already chosen and find results which match your keyword; simply enter a keyword into the search box at the top of the results list.
